David Scott wins on wild night at Eriez!

Boozel, Watson, Eckman, McGuire, Zeleznick, and Denochick also score!

Hammett, PA (June 11, 2017): It was a hot night in June and the racing at Eriez Speedway was wild with all six divisions plus the 305 Sprint cars in attendance. The night was punctuated by one of the hardest flips in many fan’s memories when Max Blair rolled six times side for side on lap one of the first heat for the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models. Blair, the defending champion in the class, was ok but the car was done for the night. In the 305 Sprint feature Kyle Colwell flipped on lap one. He was uninjured but done for the night. Tyler Denochick won the special 305 Sprint event.

Feature action started with the Nelson Lynwood Street Stocks. Outside front row starter Chris McGuire quickly jumped into the lead with pole sitter Jimmy Kennerknecht settling into second. With five compete Wesley McCray spun in turn one and was collected by Brian Crandall, slowing the race under caution. On the restart John Boardman came to second with Kennerknecht third, Brad Church fourth, and Don McGuire filling out the top five at halfway. McCray spun again in turn two with three laps left, bunching the field behind the leader. Garrett Calvert brought the third caution of the event when he spun in turn two with two laps remaining. McGuire went on to the win with Kennerknecht, Boardman, Church, and Don McGuire filling out the top five.

Steve Simon and Ken Zimmer brought the eighteen car field to green for the Ran Den Excavating E-Mods for their feature with Zimmer quickly jumping to the lead and sixth starting Joel Watson getting to second by lap four when caution was shown for Casey Bowers, spun in turn two. For green it was Watson and David Scott lining up right behind the leader. Watson pulled alongside Zimmer at the end of the lap, completing the pass, but Jarred Silvis spun in turn four, putting Zimmer back in front. This time Watson was just barely ahead at the end of the first lap of green with Scott third. At seven complete Cale Crocker spun in turn four. At green Watson started opening his lead but Bowers again spun in turn two. Troy Johnson and Bob Page got together in turn two for the next caution just one lap later. At halfway the top five were Watson, Scott, Zimmer, Mike McGee, and Gary Eicher. Two laps past halfway David Lamphere spun in turn two. Scott challenged Watson for the lead at fourteen laps and took over at the front but Watson was again the leader a lap later. Watson was able to withstand every challenge Scott threw at him over the remaining laps, winning his second feature of the year at Eriez. The top five were Watson, Scott, Zimmer, McGee, and Eicher.

Only three 305 Sprints took the green for a five lap shootout. On lap one Kyle Colwell flipped in turn four. Tyler Denochick and Gene Dobrosky finished the event in that order.

Dave Lyon and Andy Boozel brought the nineteen car Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models to green. Yellow flew twice before lap one was complete, once for debris and once when Breyton Santee spun from his sixth place starting berth in front of the rest of the field without incurring damage when they went by. Boozel took the early lead over Lyon and Kyle Zimmerman. Lyon challenged for the lead on lap five but wasn’t able to get ahead, running side by side with Boozel pulling ahead out of turn four every lap. Brandon Porter came to a halt in turn four at one lap past halfway, slowing the race under caution. At green Zimmerman got by Lyon but spun coming out of four with the field scattering behind him. Lyon was sent to the rear for his part in the incident along with Zimmerman. The new top five were Boozel, Mike Knight, Mike Lozowski, Jason Genco, and Dennis Lunger for the restart at twelve complete. Another restart before another lap was completed was needed to get the race resumed. Over the remaining laps Boozel solidified his lead with 2016 champion Jason Genco second over Knight third, Dennis Lunger fourth, and Jamie Brown fifth.

The Conway and O’Malley Tires and Service Economods started with Geoff Conn and Keith Felicity on the front row. Gary Murphy was the first yellow flag, on the opening lap. Conn took the immediate lead with Mitch Wright coming to second. Ashley Rogers and Gary Olson spun in turn one on lap two. Conn again led with Wright second and Dustin Eckman third. Another yellow slowed the field at three laps for Dennis Dellinger and another a lap later for Eric Reinwald, who had lost a wheel in turn three. At halfway Conn was still the leader with Dustin Eckman taking over at nine compete. At the checkers it was Eckman, Conn second, Felicity third, opening night’s winner Brandon Blackshear, and Wright.

Five-time champion Rich Gardner and Ward Schell brought the Plyler Overhead Door Super Late Model feature to Mark Matthews’ green flag with Dave Hess Jr spinning into the infield at the start, setting up another try. Gardner led lap one over Schell with Dave Scott coming to second on lap two. On lap four, using the high line, Scott charged to the lead. Chris Hackett came to third a lap later with Bump Hedman fourth at lap six over Schell. Matt Latta got to the top five at eight complete. Hackett caught Gardner a lap later but spun into the infield and kept going, not drawing a yellow. Bobby Rohrer and Kyle Knapp came together hard in turn three at ten complete, both suffering heavy body damage but both driving away to the pit. At the resumption of racing Hedman came to second as Rohrer rejoined the race. Gardner and Latta ran side by side for third with Latta slowly inching ahead, having the spot at fourteen laps. Steve Kania and Andy Boozel got together in turn four with ten to go. Kania was able to continue but Boozel was done for the night. Scott continued to lead with Hedman second, Hackett back up to third, Gardner fourth, and Jake Finnerty fifth. At nineteen laps yellow again flew, this time for Kania. Hess Jr had moved into fourth at the time of yellow and got to third a lap after green. Scott increased his lead over the remaining laps. Greg Oakes got to fifth with 22 complete. The top five were Scott, Hedman, Hess Jr, Hackett, and Oakes.

The front row for the last event of the night, the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Super Challengers feature was made up of Zack Eller and Roger Hall. Hall led from green but caution was quickly shown as Brian McGarvie slowed on the back straight. Both Hall and Eller were sent to the rear for failing to use the mandatory Raceivers. Spencer Marcy led from the green with Skip Jackson second and John Zeleznick coming to third by three complete when another caution again slowed the race. Matt Miller started smoking heavily and was sent pitside during the caution. Zeleznick was the leader at the end of four with Andy Proper and Marcy fighting over second, Proper gaining the spot at the end of five. Zeleznick and Proper were side by side for the lead at six laps when yellow was again shown, for a car on the infield, too close to the running surface. At seven complete Zeleznick had a four length lead over Proper and lengthened it at eight only to have Proper close in again with the white flag flying. Zeleznick held on for the win, even widening his lead at the checkers.
