Russ King and Mitchell Wright win opening Opening night features of Eriez Speedway’s “September Sweep”!

Hammett, PA (September 22, 2017): Eriez Speedway promoter Bob Rohrer started the “September Sweeps” five years ago as an end of year extravaganza of racing. Every year the event has grown and this year a season and event high 186 cars signed into the pit area for the event.

After ‘hot laps’ the thirty Zimmer Service Center ULMS/Plyler Entry Systems Late Models on hand completed time trials with Alex Feree setting the ‘fast time’ of 14.855 seconds, eclipsing the old record of 14.940, set by Brandon Sheppard at the World of Outlaws event on August 20 of this year. Four heat races were run with the top five from each advancing to the feature and the top two finishers of each B-Main also starting the 40-lap main event. Heat winners included Feree, Max Blair, Russ King, and Jared Miley. John Lobb and Matt Latta were the B-Main winners.

When the feature race action started it was the Conway & O’Malley Tires & Service Economods leading the way. Kyle Miller and Mitchel Wright, both first-time feature winners this summer, brought the field to green with Miller leading to the back straight, then Wright taking over just as caution flew when Geoff Conn spun in turn three with one lap in the books. Four cars piled up before the field made it to green. At green Brandon Blackshear came to second at the end of lap two while Wright was pulling out to the lead. At three laps newly crowned track champion Dustin Eckman was third. On lap four Miller ‘jumped’ the cushion in turn three and slammed the outside retaining wall. He was uninjured but the car suffered heavy damage. On the first lap back to green Matt Alexander was turned in front of traffic in turn two, flipping violently one and a half times, landing on his roof and pinning Bobby Vogt against the wall.

When the race resumed from the red flag condition Wright reassumed the lead with Blackshear and Gary Olson fighting for second until Blackshear established himself in the spot a lap later. At halfway in the twenty-lap season finale the race was again under yellow when Dennis Dellinger, smoking heavily, but coming all the way from 21st to ninth, had his night come to an end suddenly when he lost all power in turns three and four with a seized rear differential. For the restart it was Wright, Blackshear, Olson, Gary Miller Jr, and Ty Rhoades as the front five. With five laps remaining fourth running Gary Miller and fifth running Ty Rhoades got together in turn four, spinning and again slowing the event. Wright again led from green, seemingly to power away from the field. Wright went on to the win, his second in a row, this one worth $1011. Blackshear wound up second a half-straight behind, with Olson third, John Boyd fourth, and Jace Ferringer fifth.

Max Blair and Russ King brought the Dick Litz Memorial to green with Blair jumping out to the immediate lead and Mike Pegher just nosing King for second at the one lap mark. King was back to second a lap later with Jared Miley coming to third at four laps. Blair continued to lead, lengthening it through the first ten laps, catching the back-markers at lap eleven. In heavy traffic at thirteen laps King caught Blair but Blair was again pulling away at sixteen laps with Miley now challenging for second. At halfway Blair was a half straight ahead while Miley was pulling alongside King for the runner up spot. With ten laps left King was starting to close the gap and Miley was falling back into the clutches of Greg Oakes. King managed to get by for the lead at 34 laps and started opening his lead. At the finish Miley had caught Blair but was unable to make an attempt to get by in the all-green finale. At the checkers it was King, Blair, Miley, Greg Oakes, and Alex Feree.
